Alexander Hosea Primary School Governing Body
Why Does the School have a Governing Body?
It is a requirement by law under "The School Governance Regulations"
What is the role of central and local government?
The way the school is organised and operated is largely dictated by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and by the Local Authority - South Gloucestershire Council (which in turn operates within a framework laid down by the DfES). The school's annual income is provided by the council, which approves the annual budget set by the school based on that income. The content of the curriculum is largely dictated by the DfES. Salaries, and terms and conditions of service are laid down by the council in accordance with National Agreements.
What is the role of the Headteacher?
The Headteacher is responsible for the management of the school and its day to day running. This is done within a framework of strategy and policies laid down, or approved, by the governing body.
What does the governing body do?
Being a school governor is more than just getting good seats at school productions. Governing bodies have representatives of the school teaching and non-teaching staff, local authority, community, and parents. They meet a number of times a year and their functions include:
- § Strategy
- - Helping the Headteacher to formulate the strategic direction of the school
- - Approving the School Improvement Plan (SIP)
- - Approving the financial budget and staff organisational structure.
- § Monitoring
- - Approving policies that govern the schools operation
- - Ensuring the school is delivering the curriculum
- - Monitoring day to day operation of the school
- - Ensuring it is operating in accordance with its approved policies
- - Monitoring delivery of the School Improvement Plan
- - Ensuring the school buildings are maintained to an adequate standard
- - The Governing Body is reviewed by Ofsted during school inspections
- § Support and Liaison
- - It gives its full support to the Headteacher and the school.
- - It is a point of liaison with the Local Authority for overseeing the running of the school and input to any forthcoming changes in Local Authority policy.
- § Complaints
- - It provides a forum for complaints and issues raised by parents or staff which cannot be resolved with the Headteacher.
- § Staff Appointments
- - It appoints, and monitors the performance, of the Headteacher and assists the Headteacher with the appointment of other staff.
