Your child moves from the Foundation Year and its Early Learning Goals into Year 1 and Year 2 and begins the National Curriculum.

Instead of the six areas of learning in the Foundation Stage the timetable is structured and taught in individual subjects linking to the National Curriculum. In Year 1 and Year 2 children begin to follow the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and pupils are assessed at the end of these two years. There is an increasing emphasis on recording and the grammatical structure of language in Literacy; in Maths pupils develop their knowledge and understanding both through practical activities and in written examples.

Extra Curricular activities

There are various clubs available to Y1 and Y2 children. These are:

  • Infant Games
  • Infant Art Club (1 term per year)

School visits:

The visits are linked to the rolling programme of teaching in Y1 and Y2. These may include a visit to the theatre (Literacy), a seaside visit (History and Geography), Twigworth Nature in Art Museum (Art and Science), Westonbirt Arboretum (Literacy and Science) or Cattle Country(Science).

There are frequently visitors in school enhancing the curriculum. Examples of these are:

  • Theatre groups
  • Puppet shows
  • Live Music groups
  • Dance groups
  • Artists

Literacy

In Y1 and Y2 your child will usually read daily in school. They will progress through the reading scheme of YR, Y1/2 and Y4/5 keywords taken from the National Literacy Strategy (NLS) and will have weekly tests in these. They will be given weekly spellings of appropriate keywords and, on completion of the NLS keywords, they move onto structured spellings.

Daily Literacy lessons now include word level work (phonics, spelling, vocabulary), sentence level work (grammar and punctuation), text level work (comprehension and composition).

Mathematics

Maths lessons follow a set format stipulated in the National Numeracy Strategy (NNS). This format is:

  • Mental warm-up (5-10 minutes)
  • Main teaching & pupil activity (30-40 minutes)
  • Plenary (10-15 minutes)

We follow the Heinemann Scheme throughout KS1 and use a topic planner to incorporate the various strands of the NNS.

All subjects except Literacy and Numeracy follow a two-year rolling programme because of the mixed Y1/2 class and this avoids children repeating topics. Please see attached overview for further information; this overview may be subject to revision and amendment.

Homework

Your child will usually be given a piece of relevant Literacy and Numeracy homework at weekends unless there is a reason for other homework being set.

Assessment

All children are assessed during KS1 in a variety of subjects and there are some formal assessments at the end of KS1.

The Computer Suite

All children have access to the computer suite, including the Internet, which is closely monitored. There are a variety of web sites accessible on home computers to enhance your child's learning. These include:

How you can help your child

  • Hear them read daily.
  • Help them practise keywords (spelling and reading).
  • Do practical maths activities and play games e.g Snakes and Ladders.
  • If you wish, there is a selection of useful books available at bookshops to aid your child in their learning , especially Literacy and Numeracy( see also web-sites)
  • Remember also that teachers are always available to answer your questions and allay your concerns but appointments are preferable as they offer more quality time for discussion.
