Frequently Asked Questions

What class will my child be in next year?

At the start of school pupils may go into either of the two foundation classes. Pupils are divided to give a mix of ages and genders. We work closely with parent and try to ensure that each child will know another child in his or her class. After this because each year band can have up to 45 pupils the school organisation includes some mixed class. From Year 1 upwards children are divided by age into a Year 1, mixed Year 1 & 2 and Year 2 class. The same happens in years 3 & 4 and later in years 5 & 6. Parents/carers are informed by letter of their child’s next class in June.  In addition to these arrangements we give siblings and twins the opportunity of being in different classes. Other than this a pupil may be moved only in very exceptional circumstances.

When are the school holidays or when is a particular event?

A newsletter is sent home every term, (six times a year) with given dates and times. Dates are also published on our website. School clubs~ now called enrichment activities run for set dates, usually a block of ten weeks. These dates will be set out in letters to parents and carers. Occasionally dates do change, we try very hard no to do this but sometime it cannot be avoided. We are happy to confirm dates and times if you contact the school office.

Can the school administer medicine for my child?

If you child has a long term illness that requires regular medicine we will invite you to set up a Health Care Plan with us. The school nurse and your doctor will be involved. The school will then work with you, follow advice and make arrangements to meet the needs of your child.
We cannot administer other medicines, instead we ask you to speak to your doctor about the possibility spreading the timings that medicine are taken so that they do not conflict with school times.  We realise this may be problematic but we are following Local Authority advice on this having carried out a risk assessment on a busy office that already takes care of several Health Care Plans.

Can I take my child out of school?

Any absence from school must be authorised by the head teacher. I authorise absences for illness and medical appointments. I am allowed to authorise up to two weeks per school year for a family holiday  but do discourage this. Children miss valuable lessons and activities. I cannot authorise any other absences except for very exceptional circumstance. Pupils’ attendance is monitored by the school and Educational Welfare Officers. Attendance is recorded in school reports. Attendance of less than 95% is considered unsatisfactory.

Can my child have music tuition?

Yes the school offers music tuition provided by the Local Authorities Music Service. We currently offer violin, keyboard and guitar tuition. Children usually sign up at the beginning of the year and must give a term’s notice to finish. There is a charge for lessons and children will need their own instrument. Details are available from the school office.

Does my child go swimming at school?

Yes we offer swimming to Year 2, 3, & 4 pupils on a rota. We go by bus to the Yate swimming pool. Details are sent to pupils in those classes.  Assessments are made and pupils can gain swimming badges and certificates.
